Where to Kitesurf in November: Best Wind Destinations

November is an interesting month for kitesurf travel.

In some destinations, it is still the middle of a strong wind season. In others, the winter trades are just starting. And in the Southern Hemisphere, November marks the beginning of summer wind patterns.

That means there is no single “November kitesurfing season” worldwide.

The better question is: What kind of conditions are you looking for?

Depending on where you go, November can mean established trade winds, the beginning of a new windy season or strong Southern Hemisphere summer conditions.

Some of the best kitesurfing destinations in November include Ceará in Brazil, Perth in Western Australia, New Caledonia, La Ventana in Mexico, Cape Town, Matanzas, Boracay and Cape Verde. But they offer very different wind and water conditions, so the best choice depends on your level and the kind of riding you want to do.

November is still firmly inside the windy season in Northeast Brazil, making Ceará one of the strongest choices for a November kite trip.

By this point, the trade-wind pattern has been established for months. Days are warm, the water is warm, and the coastline gives riders access to very different types of conditions.

Around Preá and Jericoacoara, expect predominantly open-ocean riding, chop and strong wind. Elsewhere along the Ceará coast, you can find lagoons and flatter water.

But the biggest difference between Brazil and many other kite destinations is the possibility of using the coastline itself as a route.

Instead of staying at one spot for the entire holiday, riders can move along the coast through a combination of ocean sections, lagoons and long downwinders.

November is particularly interesting for riders who want a trip built around riding and exploring, rather than simply staying next to one kite beach.

November marks the beginning of the main kitesurfing season around Perth.

As the Australian summer develops, the regular south-westerly sea breeze known as the Fremantle Doctor becomes an important part of the local wind pattern.

The typical rhythm is different from destinations where the wind blows strongly from early morning.

You may start the day with relatively light conditions and see the wind build during the afternoon as the sea breeze develops.

The Perth area also offers considerable variety. Depending on the spot, riders can find ocean conditions, waves or flatter protected water.

This makes Western Australia particularly interesting for riders who want to combine kitesurfing with a longer road trip rather than staying in a single kite resort.

Best for: afternoon sea breezes, road trips and riders looking for varied conditions.

Conditions: huge lagoon, warm water, flat to choppy
Level: beginner to advanced

November marks the beginning of New Caledonia's prime trade-wind period.

The destination is very different from open-ocean locations such as Cape Town or Matanzas.

Much of the riding takes place inside an enormous lagoon, creating access to warm water and everything from relatively flat conditions to chop.

That makes New Caledonia especially interesting for riders looking for a tropical kite trip where the focus is more on freeride, progression and exploring different lagoon spots than on strong wind and large waves.

It is also one of the less obvious November destinations — particularly for riders travelling from Europe — but geographically November makes a lot of sense as the Southern Hemisphere moves into summer.

Best for: warm water, lagoon riding and a tropical kite holiday.

Conditions: Sea of Cortez, thermal wind, chop
Level: beginner to advanced

November is when the main kitesurfing season starts in La Ventana, Baja California Sur.

The local geography helps create a regular daytime wind pattern, and the kite scene becomes increasingly active as winter approaches.

Conditions are generally warmer and less extreme than Cape Town, making La Ventana accessible to a much wider range of riders.

The water is usually choppy rather than perfectly flat, so it is also a useful environment for riders who want to become comfortable outside ideal lagoon conditions.

One thing to keep in mind is timing.

November is the beginning of the season rather than its absolute peak. Conditions generally become more established as the month progresses, with December through March typically offering greater reliability.

Best for: freeride, progression, kite-town atmosphere and a North American winter escape.

Conditions: strong wind, waves, cold water
Level: mainly intermediate to advanced

If your idea of a good kite trip involves a small kite, strong wind and waves, Cape Town belongs on the November list.

November marks the beginning of the summer wind season, when the famous south-easterly Cape Doctor becomes increasingly active.

But Cape Town should not be grouped together with warm, beginner-friendly lagoon destinations.

Around Blouberg and the surrounding coastline, riders can encounter strong wind, substantial shorebreak and cold Atlantic water.

That combination is exactly why Cape Town has become such an important destination for Big Air and advanced riders.

November is early in the season, with December through February generally providing the more established summer pattern.

For less experienced riders, other spots around the wider Cape Town region may be more suitable than heading straight into strong Blouberg conditions.

Best for: strong-wind riding, waves and Big Air progression.

Conditions: ocean, waves, strong coastal wind
Level: intermediate to advanced

Chile is easy to overlook when planning a November kite trip, but its Southern Hemisphere spring makes this a particularly interesting time along parts of the central coast.

Matanzas is known for strong coastal wind and waves.

This is not the destination to choose if your priority is shallow, flat water and easy beginner conditions.

It is much more interesting for riders who are already comfortable in open water and want to combine kitesurfing with wave conditions.

The character of the trip is also very different from tropical Brazil or the Philippines: cooler water, Pacific swell and a stronger wave-riding focus.

Best for: experienced riders looking for wind and waves.

Conditions: warm water, lagoon, flat to choppy
Level: beginner to advanced

November marks the transition into the Amihan, the northeast monsoon that creates the main kitesurfing season in Boracay.

The main kite area is Bulabog Beach, on the eastern side of the island.

Compared with Cape Town or Chile, the attraction is very different: warm tropical water, lagoon conditions and a setup that works well for learning and progression as well as freeriding.

However, November is worth treating as a transition month.

The Amihan pattern is only becoming established, so late November is generally a better choice than early Novemberif wind reliability is the main reason for the trip.

For riders with fixed dates at the very beginning of November, a destination already deep into its wind season may make more sense.

Best for: warm-water riding, beginners, progression and tropical travel.

November wind: around 12–18 kt on Sal
Conditions: ocean, chop and waves
Level: intermediate to advanced depending on the spot

November marks the beginning of the windy season in Cape Verde as the northeast trade winds return.

The main kite island is Sal, where riders can find very different conditions depending on the side of the island and the spot.

Cape Verde is particularly attractive to European riders because it offers a relatively accessible winter escape with warm weather and ocean riding.

But November should not be confused with the peak of the Cape Verde season.

The trade-wind pattern generally becomes stronger and more reliable later in winter, so November is better described as the beginning of the season.

For riders primarily interested in waves, Cape Verde becomes especially interesting as the winter swell season develops.

Best for: ocean riding, waves and an early winter kite trip from Europe.

There is no single best November destination because these places offer very different types of riding.

• If your priority is established trade winds and long downwinders, Northeast Brazil is one of the strongest options.
• If you want summer sea breezes and a road-trip format, Western Australia is particularly interesting.
• For warm lagoon riding, look at New Caledonia or Boracay.
• For a social kite destination with moderate conditions, La Ventana becomes increasingly attractive as November progresses.
• And if you are looking for strong wind and waves, Cape Town and Matanzas offer a completely different kind of trip.
• Cape Verde is another option, particularly from Europe, but November is still the beginning of its main wind season.

The important distinction is not simply: “Does it blow there in November?”

It is: “Is November actually a good part of the season — and do those conditions match the way I want to ride?”

A destination where you can kitesurf in November is not necessarily a destination worth crossing the world for specifically in November.

Seasonal wind statistics are useful for choosing a destination, but they are not a forecast for your exact travel dates. Before booking, check:

• when the local wind season normally peaks;
• whether early and late November behave differently;
• the typical wind strength and direction;
• water conditions;
• air and water temperature;
• whether the main spots suit your riding level;
• and whether you need your own transport or local spot knowledge.

Then, as your trip gets closer, move from seasonal statistics to actual weather models and short-range forecasts.

Knowing how to read a wind forecast is just as important as choosing the right destination in the first place.
